of Faculty
Britton
Berek, MBA, CCE, is an Associate Director in the Standards
Interpretation Group at the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare
Organizations. At the Joint Commission, Mr. Berek interprets the Environment
of Care standards for all accreditation programs. Prior to joining the
Joint Commission, Mr. Berek was the Program Director for Technology
and Facilities Management with the University Hospital Consortium (UHC),
an alliance of academic medical centers and public health institutions.
Before UHC, Mr. Berek was with the American Hospital Association (AHA)
as the Director of Engineering and Compliance Programs for the American
Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), and also a Technology Policy
Analyst with AHA’s Health Technology Assessment Section. He has
a clinical background in engineering and information technology from
a number of community, teaching, and government healthcare facilities.
Mr. Berek holds degrees in Bio-Medical Engineering and Electrical Engineering
from Marquette University and an MBA from Northern Illinois University.
Mr. Berek is a Certified Clinical Engineer and a Certified Administrative
Surveyor for the Joint Commission.
James
M. Hunt, AIA, is a practicing design and facility management
professional with over thirty years experience. He is a registered Architect,
holds a certificate from the National Council of Architectural Registration,
and began his career practicing architecture for several major healthcare
projects. He then served as director of Facilities Management for the
Menninger Clinic for 20 years. In addition to managing their main campus,
he also consulted on behavioral healthcare unit remodeling projects
for their Clinical Network program, which involved work in eight states
including both coasts and the Midwest. During this time he was a founding
member of the Health Care Council of the International Facility Management
Association. He held several offices in the council including Chair.
He was featured in a cover story of Facility Design and Management magazine
and was published in Psychiatric Hospital magazine. Jim is now the president
of Facility Services, Inc., a facility management company serving healthcare
and general business organizations by assisting with efficient professional

David
M. Sine, ARM, CSP, has had over a twenty-year career in safety,
risk management, human factors, and organizational consulting. He has
been the state Safety Director of two Eastern states, the Senior Staff
Engineer for the JCAHO, and a Senior Consultant for the AHA. Founding
partner and one time contributing editor for Briefings on Hospital Safety,
co-author of Quality Improvement Techniques for Hospital Safety, one
time Vice Chair of the board of Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas,
Mr. Sine is certified by the Joint Board of the American Board of Industrial
Hygiene and Certified Safety Professionals and as a Certified Professional
Healthcare Risk Manager by ASHRM. He has been a healthcare risk management
consultant since 1980 and has conducted more than 1,300 JCAHO compliance
assessment surveys. He serves as a member of the NFPA 101 Life Safety
Code Subcommittee on Health Care Occupancies, the JCAHO Committee on
Healthcare Safety, and acts as a risk management advisor to the National
Association of Psychiatric Health Systems. Mr. Sine has served in the
Corporate Offices of the Tenet HealthSystem in Dallas as Director of
Risk Assessment and Loss Prevention and is currently the Vice President
of Occupational Health and Safety for the Western Division. Mr. Sine
continues to write and lecture extensively on healthcare policy, governance,

Dale
Woodin, CHFM, serves as the Deputy Executive Director of the
American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), representing the
6,300 members on codes and standards formation, revision, and interpretation.
He currently serves on the Joint Commission Hospital Advisory Council
and the Committee on Healthcare Safety, the NFPA Healthcare Section
Executive Board and the Healthcare Interpretations Task Force, and as
a member of the AIA Construction Guidelines revision committee. He has
more than 20 years experience in Healthcare Engineering. In addition
to codes and standards, he oversees ASHE's Wireless Medical Telemetry
Service and energy initiatives, including the production of the ASHE
Healthcare Energy Guidebook designated to identify best practices in
energy management. Dale holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from
the University of Illinois. He has authored articles on diverse hospital
topics, including construction, ventilation, medical telemetry, hand
hygiene products, fire modeling, and waterborne contaminants. For more
