OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify JCAHO standards (and surveyor considerations) related to the environment of care, with specific focus on the behavioral health inpatient setting.
  2. Identify the major non-JCAHO standards and guidelines related to the environment of care (AIA Minimum Construction Guidelines, Life Safety Code, National Fire Protection guidelines, Americans with Disabilities Act, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Conditions of Participation, state regulatory bodies, etc.) as they impact inpatient behavioral health settings
  3. Identify elements that could be included in a proactive risk evaluation of the impact of buildings, grounds, and equipment on patient safety in a behavioral health inpatient environment.
  4. Discuss issues related to new construction and renovation in behavioral health settings.
  5. Discuss issues related to the design of patient areas driven by the needs of various patient populations (age, severity of impairment, length of stay, etc.).
  6. List ways the Guidelines for the Built Environment of Behavioral Health Facilities can be used as a resource to behavioral health providers.
