NAPHS LEADERSHIP FORUM
October 6-7, 2008
NAPHS Committee on Behavioral Health Services within General Healthcare Systems
The NAPHS Committee on Behavioral Health Services within General Healthcare Systems held its annual Leadership Forum in Pittsburgh at the Western Psychiatric Institute & Clinic/University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. WPIC/UPMC President and CEO Claudia Roth, Ph.D., arranged for the group to tour emergency department, eating disorders, ECT, and geriatric services.
In discussion, the group shared ideas and strategies for addressing some of the most pressing concerns of this growing constituency within the NAPHS membership – including such issues as emergency department backlogs, safety, recruitment/retention, the built environment of behavioral health services within general hospital settings, and philanthropy.
Established in 1997, the committee works to elevate the concerns of psychiatric units and behavioral healthcare services within general healthcare systems both within the association and on a national level, to foster networking on critical issues, and to provide a forum for disseminating information on best practices.
At the Forum, Dennis King, VP of behavioral health, MaineHealth, and CEO, Spring Harbor Hospital, turned over chairmanship of the committee, which he had overseen for several years, to incoming committee Chair Gregory Gattman, vice president, behavioral services, Palmetto Health Behavioral Care, Columbia, SC.
The committee will next have an opportunity to network at the 2009 Leadership Forum in New York (in October 2009 -- details to come) and at the 2010 NAPHS Annual Meeting in DC (see www.naphs.org/AnnMeeting), where a committee dinner is being planned.
