NAPHS Committee on Behavioral Health Services within General Healthcare Systems

The importance of being able to identify "peer groupings" was underscored as members of the NAPHS Committee on Behavioral Health Services within General Healthcare Systems met in Chicago, IL, on October 18-19, 2007, for the committee’s second “Leadership Forum.” The meeting was hosted at Advocate Masonic Medical Center.

In interactive discussions on policy and practice, forum participants shared their perspective on a host of issues from emergency department backlogs and patient safety issues to the potential of consultation/liaison services and telepsychiatry within general healthcare systems. The group agreed to work toward identifying key questions that would be helpful in more specifically identifying peer groups.

The committee’s Steering Committee, chaired by Dennis P. King of Spring Harbor Hospital in Maine, will develop recommendations on these issues for the consideration of the full committee.

The committee also heard from NAPHS Director of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs Kathleen McCann, RN, PhD, on the role and value of the hospital-based inpatient psychiatric services (HBIPS) core measures initiative now in the testing phase. NAPHS has played a leadership role with the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors (NASMHPD) and the NASMHPD Research Institute, Inc. (NRI) in bringing this project to The Joint Commission. More than 190 hospitals are now gathering data for thNAPHS Committee on Behavioral Health Services e project, which is being conducted with the same rigor as core measures for other general health conditions. For details on the core measures project, see www.naphs.org/quality.
