NAPHS Committee on Behavioral Health Services within General Healthcare Systems

The NAPHS Committee on Behavioral Health Services within General Healthcare Systems held its annual Leadership Forum at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York. Gail Ryder, administrative director of the behavioral health service line, arranged for the group to tour emergency department and inpatient services on two campuses. NYP President and CEO Herb Pardes, M.D., participated in the event.

At the Forum, Committee Chair Gregory Gattman, vice president, behavioral services, Palmetto Health Behavioral Care, Columbia, SC, welcomed the group and appointed a new Steering Committee for the coming year.

In discussion, the group shared ideas and strategies for addressing some of the most pressing concerns of this growing constituency within the NAPHS membership – including such issues as emergency department backlogs, safety, violence, innovations, and the impact of the economy and reform on behavioral health.

Established in 1997, the committee works to elevate the concerns of psychiatric units and behavioral healthcare services within general healthcare systems both within the association and on a national level, to foster networking on critical issues, and to provide a forum for disseminating information on best practices.

The committee will next have an opportunity to network at the 2010 NAPHS Annual Meeting in DC (see www.naphs.org/AnnMeeting), where a committee dinner is being planned.
